About São Jorge

São Jorge (Portuguese: Saint George) is a civil parish in the municipality of Santana, in the island of Madeira. It is spread in an area of 19.34 km2 (7.47 sq mi).

São Jorge was created in 1515, and benefitted from the patronage of King Manuel I of Portugal when it was merely a religious parish.

Fifty kilometres from the regional capital, the parish is located 240 metres above sea level, limited in the north by the Atlantic Ocean and south by the mountains of the interior range.

Amongs the historical architecture of the area, you will find

Chapel of São Pedro (Portuguese: Capela de São Pedro), dating to the end of the 15th century

About half of the parish is covered by the rich Laurissilva forest defined as Natural Heritage by UNESCO.
